UTEG’s SDG-Driven Initiatives: Progress Since 2023

Below are UTEG’s key sustainability initiatives, organized by Sustainable Development Goal (SDG):

Breaking Poverty Cycles Through Entrepreneurship (Advancing SDG 1: No Poverty)

UTEG fosters economic inclusion among vulnerable communities through entrepreneurship programs and social engagement initiatives. For instance, the university has collaborated with adolescents, youth, and women in marginalized regions to develop their entrepreneurial skills, providing them with tools and mentorship to establish sustainable businesses. These efforts empower underserved populations by creating opportunities to enhance their income and quality of life.

Through these actions, UTEG contributes to breaking the cycle of poverty while fostering hope and prosperity in the most disadvantaged communities.

Initiatives

Agricultural Innovation for a Zero-Hunger Future (ODS 2)

With an innovative approach, UTEG contributes to ensuring food security through technological projects in the agri-food sector. One example is the implementation of Livestock 4.0 solutions, using Internet of Things (IoT) and data analytics to enhance animal health and productivity, strengthening the local food chain. By applying science and technology to agriculture, the university supports sustainable food production and the fight against hunger.

In this way, UTEG lays the foundations for a zero-hunger future where technology and innovation ensure universal access to food.

Initiatives

Quality Learning That Transforms Lives (ODS 4)

UTEG champions excellence in universally accessible education, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. The university organizes academic conferences and educational innovation congresses where students and faculty exchange knowledge and best practices. These platforms enhance learning experiences across all educational levels and modalities, driving continuous improvement and inclusive education.

By delivering quality education, UTEG transforms lives and develops leaders equipped to meet tomorrow’s challenges.

Initiatives

Empowering Women for an Equitable Future (ODS 5)

Gender equality stands as a core value at UTEG. Through dedicated programs like women-only entrepreneurship accelerators, the university supports female leaders in launching and scaling their businesses. By providing training, mentorship, and institutional backing, UTEG breaks down barriers and promotes women’s equitable participation in the economy and innovation.

Every woman empowered through these initiatives represents meaningful progress toward a more just, inclusive, and egalitarian society.

Initiatives

Water Stewardship, Life Sustained (ODS 6)

Water stewardship is a priority at UTEG. Annually, the university hosts the International Water Week, convening national and international experts to share knowledge on water management, sanitation, and resource conservation. Additionally, UTEG conducts applied research in wastewater treatment—including innovative biological reactors—and implements educational workshops (featuring virtual reality) to promote responsible water usage among students and communities.

These initiatives ensure every drop counts, safeguarding this vital resource for future generations on a sustainable planet.

Initiatives

Clean Energy for a Sustainable Campus (ODS 7)

UTEG is transforming its campus through initiatives focused on affordable and clean energy. Pilot solar panels have been installed to reduce conventional energy consumption while serving as a living lab on renewable energy for students. Concurrently, the university organizes workshops and educational field trips—such as visits to Loja’s Scientific and Technological Park—to promote energy efficiency practices and inspire youth to develop clean energy projects. UTEG students are already presenting innovative proposals in national competitions focused on renewables and sustainable solutions.

These efforts enable UTEG to reduce its carbon footprint while inspiring communities to adopt clean energy solutions that drive a greener future.

Initiatives

Driving Innovation Ecosystems (ODS 9)

As a key player in the innovation ecosystem, UTEG advances industry, innovation, and infrastructure by fostering multisector collaboration. The university notably convenes national forums gathering hundreds of business, government, and academic leaders to exchange knowledge and establish strategic partnerships. These initiatives facilitate technology transfer and innovative project development, positioning UTEG as a critical bridge between academia and industry.

By uniting efforts across sectors, UTEG catalyzes an innovation ecosystem that accelerates sustainable national development.

Initiatives

Urban Innovation for Sustainable Communities (ODS 11)

UTEG actively advances sustainable cities and communities through social engagement initiatives and urban innovation projects. Community fairs, competitions, and open-campus events enable students and faculty to present practical solutions to local challenges—ranging from mobility prototypes and green infrastructure to social enterprises and artistic contests that celebrate urban identity. Partnering with local governments and organizations, these efforts bridge knowledge with community needs while enhancing urban livability.

Through this approach, UTEG transforms academic innovation into civic action, co-creating more inclusive, resilient, and eco-conscious cities.

Initiatives

Cultivating a Culture of Responsible Consumption (ODS 12)

UTEG champions responsible production and consumption by embedding sustainable practices across academia and business sectors. The university hosts awareness forums on recycling and circular economy principles, alongside hands-on workshops where entrepreneurs and students learn to optimize supply chains through ecological standards. Additionally, UTEG drives research projects replacing chemical inputs with natural alternatives in industrial processes. Concurrently, it mentors MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises) in implementing environmental best practices—from waste management to green certification.

By rooting sustainability in education and commerce, UTEG cultivates a new generation that produces and consumes within planetary boundaries.

Initiatives

Climate Action Through University Leadership (ODS 13)

Confronting the global challenge of climate change, UTEG embraces a role of continuous leadership and learning. The university has hosted international congresses on sustainable development and environment, where students, experts, and scientists debate climate solutions. UTEG also participates in national summits and global networks (like UI GreenMetric) that benchmark and share sustainable campus best practices. At high-level events—including the ‘Let’s Talk Change’ forum and ESG Sustainability Summit—UTEG showcases flagship initiatives (campus solar energy, inclusive scholarships, corporate environmental training), demonstrating academia’s vital contribution to climate action.

Through knowledge exchange and global cooperation, UTEG multiplies its climate impact while inspiring other stakeholders to unite in protecting our planet.

Initiatives

Ocean Conservation Through Education (ODS 14)

Protecting marine life is integral to UTEG’s sustainability commitment. As part of its environmental programming, the university conducts educational sessions on ocean pollution—raising awareness about plastic and microplastic impacts on marine ecosystems. These activities engage both students and the general public, fostering ecological consciousness beyond the classroom.

By educating about healthy oceans’ importance, UTEG helps preserve marine biodiversity while advancing collective stewardship of our seas.

Activities

Educating Nature Guardians (ODS 15)

UTEG champions education as a tool to conserve terrestrial ecosystems. Partnering with organizations like Plan International, the university has launched initiatives engaging children in environmental protection. For instance, during World Environment Day, interactive activities and educational sessions transformed children into ‘Nature Guardians,’ teaching them about local biodiversity and sustainability from an early age. This early cultivation of ecological values reflects UTEG’s commitment to preserving forests, flora, and fauna.

By inspiring new generations to cherish and protect nature, UTEG plants the seeds for thriving ecosystems.

Activities

Amplifying Impact Through Partnerships (ODS 17)

Recognizing that major challenges demand cooperation, UTEG champions strategic alliances to advance sustainable development goals. In recent years, the university has established dozens of agreements with educational institutions, healthcare organizations, businesses, and national/international agencies to exchange knowledge, conduct joint research, facilitate internships, and co-host events. Notable collaborations include: dual-degree programs with University of Bordeaux (France); joint initiatives with Ecuadorian universities (e.g., co-creating INNOVATECH with Technical University of Manabí); and partnerships with organizations like Women in Tech (PINKTECH) for digital inclusion mentoring. These alliances strengthen academic programs, accelerate innovation, and expand community outreach.

By working in synergy, UTEG multiplies every initiative’s impact: when academia, public sector, and private enterprise unite, Sustainable Development Goals transform from distant targets into shared achievements.
